"We're an American-owned organisation, but we also have a long New Zealand heritage, starting back in the early 80’s. The way that Catalyst presented to us was really clear that they'd understood the brief and had hit the concepts that were really important to us emotionally and culturally as an organisation."

Gallagher Insurance New Zealand, formerly known as Crombie Lockwood, were keen to get their Auckland central teams working from one flagship office, having been in two central city locations for many years and so required a complete refit to accommodate both locations and various functional teams together and also presented a perfect opportunity to showcase the planned rebrand to Gallagher.
Catalyst were engaged as design and build consultants for their Beaumont St, Auckland location. This would be the second major office project Catalyst would deliver for Crombie Lockwood (now Gallagher Insurance), the first being in Wellington, and smaller works in Whangarei and Auckland West.
Consolidating two central city Auckland offices to one large head office can come with its challenges, Catalyst proposed to do this as a staged approach, creating a new modern, fresh work environment to foster collaboration, represent brand and support their culture.
As Gallagher worked through their re-brand, the Catalyst design team pivoted to accommodate the new intention. The brief remained - build an office that was a better working environment than being at home with recognition to beautiful New Zealand and the company’s 45-year journey serving clients in New Zealand.
The expansive 4754sqm office includes end of trip facilities, an executive area, a biophilic reception, large café style kitchen and multiple breakout spaces that foster a touch down work environment and social get-togethers, a large open plan office area with collaboration and focus spaces scattered throughout.
Other key features to the design are the popular ‘Kiwi Bach’ meeting rooms with classic longboard surfboards; representing the different brand identities over the many years as Crombie Lockwood the utilisation of parts of the base build (exposed concrete and ducting), sound proofing features, natural wood finishes and the impressive amount of native greenery throughout.
Build component:
A comprehensive understanding of the project brief and requirements were critical to the success of this project, having the right team on the ground to weave this together, providing motivation, support, and leadership. This ensured that all milestones and deliverables were achieved, and all parties stayed on track.
Equipped with the right support and coordination, strong project governance from the client, efficient project management systems, and a rigorous quality management process, our team were able to achieve the desired project build outcomes, regardless of time, cost, risk and scope pressures, whilst addressing design changes during construction phase.
