Project Information
Cultural Design
From the outset, our mission was clear: to infuse a rich cultural narrative into the design. We recognised the importance of representing the community's heritage, so we enlisted a cultural advisor to guide us in creating a design that was both respectful and meaningful. This cultural thread was subtly woven throughout the built form, creating a space that resonates with the community it serves.
Project Management Success
Our in-house project management team laid the groundwork by establishing a detailed program and feasibility budgets right at the start. By setting clear budget parameters early on, we ensured that our design remained aligned with the client’s expectations. We engaged multiple sub-trades for competitive pricing, ensuring transparency every step of the way.
Constructing with Care
During the construction phase, our dedicated team provided invaluable input on buildability, particularly for the bespoke details that defined the project. We paid special attention to high-level glazing features and acoustics, identifying long-lead items early on. Innovative materials and techniques were explored to keep costs in check while achieving stunning results. For instance, we used sustainable birch ply sheets, individually stained and laser-cut to create slats that echoed the cultural motifs of the area.
Prioritising Safety and Sustainability
Safety for staff was paramount. Catalyst collaborated closely with a security representative to implement comprehensive physical security guidelines. Additionally, sustainability was a key focus; our clients chose to repurpose existing workstations and furniture, reupholstering them to fit the new color scheme. This not only minimised waste but also added a unique flair to the space.
Maximising Natural Light and Flexibility
We designed the workstations to embrace natural light, positioning them around the perimeter while centralising meeting and video conferencing rooms for easy access and sound buffering. The strong angular geometry of the design references the cultural narrative, harmoniously blending innovative construction methods with organic forms in social and event spaces.
By exposing the ceiling and integrating a new HVAC system, we flooded the space with natural light. The addition of suspended track lighting and hanging green planters further enhanced the environment, promoting well-being and creativity.
A Modern, Adaptive Space
Technology and flexible spaces were pivotal in our design. Each meeting and collaboration area was tailored for seamless use, adapting to the varied needs of staff. An operable wall on the lower level provided dynamic reconfiguration options, perfect for training sessions, meetings, and collaborative projects.
Celebrating Architectural Heritage
We embraced existing architectural features, like the full-height K braces, which we painted in earthy tones to resemble the surrounding trees and tokotoko. These structural elements not only supported the upper floors but also guided the primary circulation pathway, creating inviting spaces for pause and connection before meetings.
At Catalyst, we don’t just build structures; we create environments that foster community, collaboration, and innovation. We’re proud of what we accomplished with this local government agency and look forward to more projects that bring together culture, sustainability, and cutting-edge design.
