In the heart of Auckland, the Midcity cinema complex once thrived as a vibrant entertainment hub since its opening in 1984. However, after closing nearly two decades later, the unique but challenging space remained vacant, with numerous attempts to find a suitable tenant falling short. That was until 2018, when Cityfitness seized the opportunity to transform the expansive 4,000sqm space into a state-of-the-art fitness center, breathing new life into this iconic building.
The project involved a comprehensive refurbishment and reconfiguration to accommodate Cityfitness’s growing needs. Key improvements included reinstating the existing stairs from level two, installing a new interconnecting stairway, and refurbishing escalators for seamless access. Upgrades to mechanical services, energy-efficient lighting, and enhanced fire protection services ensured the facility met modern standards.
The reimagined space now boasts generous changing rooms, dedicated cardio and weight areas, a large group fitness room, and specialised studios for cycling and yoga. The transformation has not only delighted Cityfitness members but also revitalised the surrounding Queen Street area. With increased foot traffic flowing through the existing arcade mall, the once-quiet building is now a vibrant hub, bustling with Aucklanders eager to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Cityfitness's new location stands as a testament to the power of innovative repurposing, contributing to the diverse tapestry of businesses that define the heart of the city.
