Project Information
Christchurch Railway Station in Addington is the terminus of the South Island’s two long-distance passenger trains, the Tranz Alpine and the Coastal Pacific.
In pre-COVID times, with increasing tourism and booming passenger numbers, The Great Journeys of New Zealand | KiwiRail wished to improve the passenger facilities and customer experience.
In 2019, Catalyst Group South Island was engaged to review the existing facilities and design a new check-in and waiting area that would increase the passenger capacity as well as deliver a new contemporary interior with some ‘wow’ factor.
The Catalyst team removed the original 1990s check-in area and replaced it with a feature timber fin and Autex Acoustics New Zealand ceiling, new check-in counters and solid oak fin wall to frame the space. New carpet and soft seating fabrics are based on the colours of the The Great Journeys of New Zealand | KiwiRail palette echoing the natural tones found in the landscapes of the rail journeys.
A dramatic black line graphic wraps around the rear walls of the check-in area referencing the mountain journey of the TranzAlpine and the ocean experience of the Coastal Pacific. Catalyst also project managed the build process to ensure minimal disruption to the staff working within the station as well as the daily check-in activities as normal rail services continued to operate.
