Ngā mihi o Te Wiki o te Reo Māori! Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is a chance to celebrate Aotearoa’s indigenous language and encourage its use in our everyday lives.
This year at Catalyst, we took the opportunity to bring a little more te reo Māori into our workplaces through simple, practical and fun initiatives across the week.
As a 100% Kiwi-owned and operated company, we value the importance of te reo Māori and the role it plays in our shared identity as New Zealanders. Rather than keeping our learning to one week of the year, we wanted to encourage our people to use te reo in ways that feel natural and achievable in everyday conversation.
Each morning, our teams received a new phrase to learn and put into practice throughout the day. From greetings and checking in with colleagues to asking what’s for lunch, the phrases were intentionally simple and relevant to everyday interactions.
A few rewards for those who put the phrases into practice added a little friendly motivation, while helping turn learning into something active rather than simply reading a phrase and moving on.
To finish the week, we brought the team together for Whakarongo Mai, Simon Says!
The game put some of the week's learning into practice, challenging everyone to listen carefully, think quickly and respond to simple instructions in te reo Māori. It was a fun way to build confidence while reinforcing some useful everyday verbs and phrases.
For us, te wiki o te reo Māori is not just about learning a handful of new words for one week. It’s an opportunity to build confidence, normalise the use of te reo Māori in our workplaces and encourage small steps that can continue throughout the year.
A big ngā mihi to everyone who took part, gave the phrases a go and helped make learning together part of our week.
