International chic meets New Zealand's homely charm
Moving to a smaller space at Level 13 of the AMP Tower in Auckland CBD, technology company Oracle New Zealand briefed Catalyst Group to design and project manage their Auckland office. They required a fit for a tighter floor plate that still encompassed a sense of space. Catalyst rose to the challenge.

Tech-firm Oracle has long been propelled by a culture of innovation, a mindset that Catalyst wanted to mirror in the development of their new office based in the downtown waterfront precinct.

Oracle1.jpgAs leaders in the international market, the offices needed to maintain the company’s global identity, but as a New Zealand location, still retain a relaxed atmosphere for permanent staff in the main working space.

The aim was to combine an industrial atmosphere with a homely look – no mean feat as these two styles are typically considered to be on opposite ends of the design spectrum. This is shown throughout the fit out, with areas such as the front of house area being adorned with two-tone herringbone timber floors and copper feature lights to add warmth and character as a contrast against the exposed ceilings.Oracle3.jpgCatalyst ensured that the development of each working space within the office had collaboration and peer-engagement at its core to reflect the client’s values in every element of the design. A unique feature in the back of house area was the incorporation of a graphic carpet tile to set the working area apart from the built elements.

Unified by a central kitchen hub with panoramic views of the harbor, the office is crafted around its flexible breakout spaces. The kitchen area adjoins configurable meeting areas with moveable walls and modular furniture to cater to any size meeting or function.

Catalyst designers achieved this with the implementation of separate fixed desks for full time staff accompanied by a pod of touch down desks for flexible use.

The local Oracle team were part of the process from start to finish, engaging in workshops to chat through everything from layout to finishes, meaning that their workspace was created with their individual ideal working conditions in mind.

While the industrial elements still run through the core of the design, Catalyst worked to convey a sense of luxury with a high level of detail and precision in the execution. Working with materials such as timber, black aluminum, tiles, textured glass, stone and highlighting exposed ceilings, the result is a beautifully designed contemporary space, incorporating local flavor whilst maintaining global standards.
